Livramento Injury Scare Disrupts England's World Cup Plans
England’s World Cup preparations have been jolted on the brink of their opening game, with Tino Livramento reportedly set to fly home after suffering a calf injury.
Thomas Tuchel’s squad are leaving their Kansas City base for Texas after a final training session ahead of Wednesday’s Group L opener against Croatia. Until now, the camp had enjoyed a rare luxury at a major tournament: every outfield player available, every session open to the cameras without a single fitness concern.
That calm has been shattered.
Livramento, the Newcastle full-back whose energy and versatility had given England another dimension down the flank, is now expected to miss the entire tournament rather than just Tuesday’s workout. The first public sign that something was wrong came on Sunday, when he pulled out of scheduled media duties. Reports since have pointed to a calf problem serious enough to end his World Cup before it begins.
The timing could hardly be worse. Tactical plans are set, roles defined, the opener looming. Now Tuchel and his staff must redraw part of the blueprint on the fly.
Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah is believed to be under consideration as a replacement. His inclusion would alter the balance of the defensive unit, offering an extra central option rather than a like-for-like attacking full-back, and forcing a rethink on how England structure their back line against Croatia and beyond.
There is at least one small advantage: the rules give England a narrow window to act. FIFA regulations allow nations to replace injured players up to 24 hours before their first match, meaning the paperwork must be completed by 3pm local time in Texas (9pm Irish time). Until that deadline passes, the phones in the England camp will not be quiet.
The squad fly south knowing their World Cup has already thrown up its first test, before a ball has even been kicked.
