Chalobah Joins England's World Cup Squad as Late Replacement
Trevoh Chalobah has been drafted into England’s 2026 World Cup squad as a late replacement after a calf injury ruled out a former Chelsea Academy defender on the eve of the tournament.
The change, permitted under FIFA rules which allow outfield players to be switched up to 24 hours before a team’s opening game, reshapes Gareth Southgate’s defensive options just days before England kick off their campaign.
Chalobah, 26, arrives with only one senior cap to his name, earned in a friendly against Senegal almost exactly a year ago, but with a growing reputation and the versatility to cover multiple positions across the back line. He links up again with club team-mate Reece James, giving England a familiar Chelsea axis on the right side of their defence.
The timing is tight. England face Croatia in their first Group L fixture at Dallas Stadium on Wednesday 17 June, with a 9pm (UK) kick-off. The margins for adjustment are slim, the stakes anything but.
Chalobah’s inclusion adds fresh energy to a squad that will also meet Ghana in Boston on Tuesday 23 June, again at 9pm (UK), in what could prove a decisive second group game.
One defender’s misfortune has opened the door. Now Chalobah steps into a World Cup dressing room knowing the next few weeks could redefine his international career.
