Tottenham's Pursuit of Sandro Tonali: De Zerbi's Bold Move
Tottenham Hotspur have drawn a clear line in this summer’s market: they want a statement midfielder, and they want him now. The name at the top of Roberto De Zerbi’s list is Sandro Tonali – and the Newcastle United star is understood to be keen on making the move to north London.
This is not a routine enquiry. It is a power play.
Spurs go bold in midfield hunt
Over the last two seasons, Tonali has grown into one of the Premier League’s standout central midfielders, a modern conductor with bite. That has inevitably dragged him into the orbit of the division’s heavyweights. Arsenal pushed in January and came up short. The interest never really faded, with other Big Six clubs hovering in the background.
Newcastle, after all, looked vulnerable. They needed sales and eventually cashed in on Anthony Gordon, easing some of the financial pressure around St James’ Park. That deal changed the landscape. They no longer have to sell Tonali. They will only listen if someone makes it impossible to say no.
Tottenham are trying to be that club.
They have already moved quickly this window, snapping up Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers while working on deals for Savinho, Jan Paul van Hecke and Joao Palhinha. Those moves hinted at a rebuild. The pursuit of Tonali screams of a reset in ambition.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Spurs have “entered the race” for the Italian, setting themselves up against Manchester City and Arsenal for a player they believe can elevate the entire project.
De Zerbi doesn’t just approve. He is driving it.
De Zerbi, Tonali and the Brescia bond
Inside Tottenham, the push has a distinctly personal edge. De Zerbi and Tonali share more than nationality; they share a city. Both come from Brescia, a football town in northern Italy that prides itself on producing players with grit and personality as much as technique.
Romano described that Brescia connection as “excellent” and a real factor in the chase. De Zerbi is said to be pushing hard behind the scenes to bring Tonali in “as soon as possible”, seeing him as the midfielder who can set the tone for his tenure.
This is not a vague admiration from afar. It is a manager identifying his midfield general and asking the club to go and get him.
Tonali’s stance: no Europe, no problem
Crucially for Spurs, Tonali’s position looks clear. According to Romano, the 24-year-old is “keen on a move to Tottenham” and “open to joining Tottenham” despite the absence of European football and the scars of a poor season in N17.
That is a significant detail. Players at Tonali’s level usually insist on Champions League nights as a basic condition. Here, the pull is different. He is described as being attracted by the project and, specifically, by the chance to play under De Zerbi.
It gives Tottenham something rare in a high-end transfer race: a player ready to come without the usual guarantees, trusting the manager and the direction rather than the immediate stage.
The possibility of Tonali in a Spurs shirt, Romano insists, is “really serious” and “really concrete”. The desire is there. The fit is obvious. The manager is all-in.
One obstacle remains, and it is a sizeable one.
Newcastle’s stance: £100m or forget it
Newcastle have drawn their own line. TEAMtalk report that the Magpies have “no intention of making it easy” for any club pursuing Tonali this summer. Their position is blunt: they will only begin to consider a sale if offers exceed £100 million.
That figure is not a starting point for haggling. It is a barrier.
Newcastle know what they have. A high-end midfielder, already proven in the Premier League, under contract, and central to their long-term plans. They also know the optics. Selling Tonali cheaply, so soon after Gordon’s departure, would send the wrong message about their trajectory.
Negotiating with Newcastle has rarely been straightforward in this new era, and Spurs are walking straight into that reality. Romano underlined that “it is never easy to strike a deal with Newcastle,” but made it clear Tottenham “will be on it.”
So the scene is set.
A manager with a clear target. A player who wants the move. A club willing to be aggressive in the market. And across the table, a rival demanding a nine-figure fee to even start the conversation.
If Tottenham are serious about proving their intentions, this is the kind of deal that will define them. Are they prepared to pay Newcastle’s price to hand De Zerbi his Brescia-born midfield leader, or will Tonali become another near-miss in a market that rarely forgives hesitation?
